A drift study of vertical distribution and mortality of Engraulis anchoita eggs and larvae. OceanDocs
Sánchez, R.P.; de Ciechomski, J.D.; Lasta, C.A.; Guerrero, R.A..
Lagrangian changes in distribution and survival within an anchovy egg and larvae patch were studied by means of multiple opening/closing sampling following a free drifting buoy. The buoy was equipped with a radar reflector and flashing light, and it was connected to a current cross drogue floating at 15 m depth, which corresponded to the main egg and larvae concentration within the patch. The drifter was launched on the Buenos Aires continental shelf, off Necochea during the spring spawning peak of 1983. Three discrete depths (within, below and above the thermocline)were repeatedly sampled close to the drogue with a Motoda sampler. Egg and larval abundances in the vicinity of the drogue were monitored at 3/4 hour intervals for a period of three days. Each...

Schejter, L..
Zygochlamys patagonica is distributed in the Atlantic Ocean from 35 degree S to Tierra del Fuego (Argentina), and in the Pacific Ocean, up to 42 degree S, between 40 and 200 m depth. There are 9 beds in the Argentinian Sea. Scallops are suspensivore organisms, feeding on detritus and phytoplankton. The aims of this thesis are to make a quali-quantitative study of the diet of the Patagonian scallop, to detect seasonal changes in diet and to link these results with oceanographic conditions and with the growth pattern. Gut contents of 180 scallops were analyzed from samples (n=30) taken in June, August, October and November 1996, and February and March 1997. This procedure was tested statistically. Twelve species of diatoms and resting stages, five species of...

OceanDocs
Sánchez, M.F.; Garcia de la Rosa, S.B..
Feeding of Argentine hake during winter 1994, between 50 and 370 m of depth, in the studied area (34°50'-47°S), is based on the consumption of zooplanktonic crustaceans, fishes and cephalopods. Maximum feeding incidence is found at 36°-40°S (51. ), in sea layer of 80-130 m deep (62. ) and between 8:00-10:00 hours (36,6. ). Cluster analysis shows five spatial groups, with similar length distributions and characteristic principal prey items combination. The males of all sizes show a trend to feed on euphausids and hiperiids amphipods. The females eat more quantities of hake, short fin squid and other fishes. There is a change in diet related with predator size, from 47 cm TL onwards for males, and from 53 cm TL for females. This change consists in a decrease...

Aspectos biológico-pesqueros del abadejo (Genypterus blacodes) OceanDocs
Renzi, M.A..
The kingklip is one of the species that has been traditionally exploited in the Argentine Sea. Although captures were not very important, they have been increased in the last years. In this paper, the structure of the concentration areas of summer, spring and winter distribution and other biological aspects were analyzed, on the basis of the data collected during cruises carried out by R/V"Walther Herwig" and R/V"Shinkai Maru" in Argentine waters during 1978/79. The trophic spectrum of the kingklip comprises mainly food species of the Classes Pisces and Crustacea as well as other complementary groups like Mollusca, Brachiopoda and haliacea.

The San Bernardo Archipelago, in the Colombian Caribbean zone, is well recognized for being a sporadic nesting and feeding area for the green, hawksbill and loggerhead turtles. Due to the fact that the San Bernardo Archipelago has outstanding coral areas, marine grasses and sandy beaches and their environmental offers for the marine turtles have not been described yet, it was opportune to carry out this study between July and October of 2002. Thus, this research tends to fill this gap by describing the nesting beaches and feeding areas according to their geomorphologic and biotic aspects and, for the later areas, some oceanographic aspects too. Seven potential nesting beaches and 20 stations on feeding areas were evaluated to identify natural and...

Adult and juvenile fish inter and intraspecific predation may be an important source on these first development stages. In this work, adult and juvenile mackerel samples from two areas of Buenos Aires province, one south of Cape San Antonio and the other near Mar del Plata city were analyzed. An important anchovy postlarvae ingestion in both regions considered was observed. A high number of mackerel eggs in the stomach contents from adults was identified. This evidence of cannibalistic behaviour in the argentine mackerel is the first of its kind made in this species and allows to suggest that embryo mortality due to cannibalism might constitute and important percentage of the total embryonic mortality.

Fraga, I.; Reyes, R.; Ortega, N.; Regueira, E.; Font, R.; Bravo, A..
In order to establish the management methods in snook Centropomus undecimalis (Bloch, 1792) broodstock (initial average weight 960 g), during 18 month three phases were developed. Fishes were marked, measured, weighed and distributed in 5 m3 fiber glass tanks (stock density 1.3 kg/m3). In the first phase (3 month), different feeding schedules were applied: 1. feeding in alternate days; 2. feeding every day excluding weekends; 3. feeding twice a day. Before maturation phase and during three month, enriched semi humid food was supplied. Finally, during 12 month, artificial feed was supplied. The appetite dynamics in fishes was influenced by the feeding schedule applied. When food was offered in alternate days, higher consumption was observed. Females showed...

This work is a first approach in the study of the trophic ecology from a multispecific fishery in San Jorge Gulf (45°-47°S), Argentina. Stomach contents from 28 demersal fish species were analyzed. Taxonomic and trophic spectrum were obtained. Using weight percentage of each prey, trophic spectrum variations for size classes were analized for each of the 12 considered "dominant" species. Overlaping in the diet among these predators was estimate using cluster analysis. There was an interespecific diet overlap between juveniles belonging to demersal-benthic fish species, because all of them prey upon Stomatopoda and Munida. Adults from those species and hake prefered young and adult hake as preys, while Macruronus magellanicus and juvelines Merluccius hubbsi...

Efficiency of co-feeding red porgy (Pagrus pagrus L.)larvae with live and compound diet OceanDocs
Aristizabal, E.O.; Suárez, J..
The red porgy (Pagrus pagrus)is an important commercial and recreational species with very good prospect for aquaculture. Because significant mortalities, the mass production of this species is limited. This paper describes three weaning strategies to investigate their effects on the survival and growth of red porgy larvae reared in laboratory: A)traditional three-step weaning (rotifers - Artemia - diet)(control); B)one-step early weaning by co-feeding (rotifers - Artemia + diet), and C)one-step direct early weaning (rotifers - diet). Sigificative differences were recorded among treatments (P0.05). Best survival rate (45.6 ± 7.6 percent)and growth (7.4 ± 0.5 mm)were found in treatment B. Results indicate that co-feeding red porgy larvae with inert and live...

Results of the inclusion of GICABU and torula yeast in the diet for the Caribbean white shrimp (Litopenaeus schmitti) juveniles and cachaza oil in postlarvae diet are presented. Three completely randomised experimental designs were carried out to evaluate practical and semipurified diets, in juveniles and postlarvae respectively, with different by-products inclusion levels. Food was accepted and consumed in all the experiments. Shrimps reached a significantly higher growth (P<0.05) when torula yeast was included at 15, 20 and 25 % in diet, thus demonstrating the feasibility of the partial fish meal substitution. No significant differences were found (P>0.05) when GICABU was included up to 10 % in juvenile diet. Total replacement of sunflower oil by...
